3400 youth workers have converged on downtown Sacramento. The first general session just ended. Mark Yaconelli spoke and had some powerful things to say about the state of youth ministry. His most compelling point was the importance of Seeing people. Young people (really all people) are desperately wanting to be really seen and accepted with another's eyes. Jesus saw people. Jesus brought transformation to so many by looking into the eyes of those to whom he was present. Really seeing into the life of people results in compassion. A great example was how we have been moved to compassion for the victims of Katrina because forgotten, marginalized people were exposed by this tragedy and we have been forced to see them.
In addition to putting finishing touches on the two seminars I am doing, we have led two Midday Prayer services and been in non-stop meetings. I got a run in and have seen a ton of friends. I caught a showing of Tom Hank's 3D Magnificient Desolation which was amazing. Tonight I have a Soul Shaper Board meeting. Our main focus is developing ways (curriculum, retreats, etc.) to nurture the Souls of Youth Workers.
I really miss my wife on this wonderful Friday night.
