The Church and Changing Culture...
We had a great day today with Brian McLaren. The Church and Changing Culture was the theme for the day. I loved it because so many of my worlds came together. We had twenty some YouthFront staff there and six of our Jacob's Well staff and around 100 or so who are involved in the KC Emergent Cohort and maybe 40-50 youth workers who are involved in YouthFront Networks and a bunch of fellow Nazarene Theological Seminary students and several pastors and several YouthFront summer staff who attend MANU and friends and acquaintances and wow, it was a great day. I got a big kiss from Brian and we spent a half hour together after lunch talking about some cool possibilities on the horizon. I think some of the sessions are going to be available on the MANU website. One of our staff said, "it is great to see so many people here today who have really been threatened by this conversation over the last couple of years. This conversation is finally moving into the mainstream, finally." If you were there, what did you think of the day?

*Sigh*. "Brian McLaren Day" was incredible...it was great to soak him up for 5 hours after a several-year-long journey of reading through some of his writings, struggling, questioning, and eventually coming back to a much better balance of spirituality than i was at before. A balancing act that continues to always sway back and forth, but always lands closer and closer to the center. Anyway, specifically from the day, I found the summary of the progression from modernity to post-modernity fascinating and clarifying; especially the conversation on "from conquest and control to conservation." Likewise, "from analysis to holism"--how much better it is to look at the bigger picture. Then the final message on justice and mercy. These are all things I think many of us have been thinking on often, overwhelmed by the issues within sects of religion, and moreso issues throughout the globe (both historical and current)--and it was refreshing to hear someone say so much of what we're all thinking, but don't say (or when we do, it doesn't make sense-with the exception of tim keel, mike king, and bono..heh heh). I learned a lot on Thursday, and even moreso had words put to a lot of the things floating around in my head and heart. Thanks for bringing us along, Mike!

Hey Moe,
You are one of my hero's. I love the journey you are on. Have you read Generous Orthodoxy yet? I think you would like it.
