So I'm sitting here in Panera Bread in Kansas City with Nick Pickrell waiting for Jamie Roach so we can head to Minneapolis to attend the Enroute Conference. First a kind woman with her mother and her daughters who were sitting at a table next to me asked if I work with YouthFront. When I confirmed that that was the case she shared stories of how her kids have grown up at YouthFront Camps. She was so encouraging.
A few minutes later Rick Sutcliffe (former Major League Pitcher and current ESPN Major League Baseball Analyst) walked in. I fearfully remember batting against Rick in my little league days. Shelby, his daughter, who is in Graduate School in Boston was with him. Shelby hung out at our Student Life, attended YouthFront stuff and was a good friend of my son, Daniel during her high school years. After our catch up conversation I went back to work. I noticed that I had a copy of my book Presence Centered Youth Ministry in my backpack so I walked over and handed it to her. A couple minutes later Rick and Shelby came over to my table because Shelby wanted to tell me that the night before her fiance had told her that he was working on putting some stuff together for the youth in their church on Practicing the Presence of God. She felt that our encounter was divine and I did too.
