A couple of friends recently appeared on CNN.
Well one is a casual friend, who is more of a good acquaintence, who I run into a couple times a year and enjoy seeing. To call Rob Bell a friend can get you into trouble by some who seem bent on declaring him a heretic and therefore concluding that you (if you dare call him friend) must be one too.

The other friend is a close and dear friend, Jeremy Affeldt, who pitches for the San Francisco Giants. For several years we have been on a spiritual journey together, have shared life and dreamed dreams, Good News dreams. Jeremy, who has stepped up into the role of Closer for the Giants while Brian Wilson rehabilitates an injury, was Major Leagues Baseball Reliever of the Year in 2009, has been to the World Series twice and is now a World Series Champion (who has a home full of really cool baseball memorabilia) but the best thing about Jeremy is his love for Jesus Christ, his family and for the marginalized and poor. This CNN report is especially cool for me because I connected Jeremy and David Batstone when Jeremy signed with the Giants.

Actually, I would be disturbed if John Piper, et.al., agreed with everything I believed. But even so, I don't disagree with their theology so much as their epistemology, they are dead-sure certain about things that no human can really be certain about. They then use this certainty to cut off fellow believers at the knees. There should always be a certain humility among us when we are talking about the things of God.
